For nearly 20 years the Garden has been working to conserve this nearly extinct conifer native to southwest Georgia and the Florida panhandle. You can catch a glimpse of one at the waterfall below the Conservation Garden at the Midtown Atlanta location. Florida Torreya has been adversely impacted by habitat destruction and introduced diseases. The primary pathogen affecting Florida Torreya is Fusarium torreyae, a fungus that causes cankers in the trunk and stems of the trees that eventually causes severe decline and death. ABG is participating in efforts to better understand this pathogen and how to control its impact on Florida Torreya.
