Undergraduate Internships in Plant Conservation

About the Program

Mentoring the next generation of conservation scientists is central to the mission of the Garden's Conservation & Research department. Our department offers three undergraduate student internship programs:

  1. Research-focused internships for course credit
  2. Paid internships to focus on a specific project
  3. Volunteer internships

Information on specific internships is provided below. Further questions can be directed to cr-intern@atlantabg.org. Students will be accepted to internships on a rolling basis. Internships are limited and depend on availability of mentors.

Research-focused Internships for Course Credit- Currently Full - Not accepting Applications at this time.

The Conservation & Research department offers internships for course credit to undergraduate students in the Atlanta or Gainesville area. To learn more about the program, read the candidate requirements below.

To submit your application, please fill out the application form. Here, you will be able to submit your resume and statement of interest as well as tell us a bit more about your research interests and how they may align with opportunities at the Garden.

Eligibility

  1. Must be currently enrolled at a College or University that allows internships or experiential learning for course credit during the semester you are applying for.
  2. Able to commit 9-12 hours of work per week on site at either the Midtown Atlanta or Gainesville location.

Internships at the Gainesville location are currently only available in Conservation Horticulture.

Students who lack previous research experience but want to pursue a career in plant conservation biology are encouraged to apply. No prior research experience is required, but a basic knowledge of plant biology and ecology is beneficial.

In accordance with Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972, the Atlanta Botanical Garden does not discriminate on the basis of sex in its programs or activities, including in employment or admissions.

Application Requirements

To complete the online application, you must have a recent resume and statement of interest ready. In your resume, be sure to highlight your career goals, interests, and any courses you have taken in addition to research and work experience. Feel free to highlight what you have learned in classes or describe a class project you enjoyed. Many of you will not have much independent research experience, so this is one way to show us what you have accomplished that has been interesting to you. The statement of interest should describe your career goals in more detail and how an internship at the Atlanta Botanical Garden will help you achieve those goals.

Paid Internships

The Conservation and Research Department occasionally has grant funds to sponsor an intern to assist with a specific project. When these are available, they will be posted on the employment page on the Atlanta Botanical Garden website. Each posting will include specific instructions on how to apply.

Volunteer Internships - Currently Full - Not accepting Applications at this time

If you are not in need of course credit and there are no available paid internships but you would still like to gain experience in the field of plant conservation, we encourage you to volunteer with our department. Please fill out the volunteer interest form and someone will be in contact with you.
